Best Nut Milk Bag! February 23, 2010

Straining almond milk

I think I’ve found the best nut milk bag: good design, great price ($8.88), and free shipping! If you don’t already make your nut milk at home, it’s amazing to see how much you can save by doing it yourself. Plus, it couldn’t be easier…and there’s absolutely no waste! If you buy your nuts in bulk, you have no packaging to recycle or throw away. Plus, you can use the nut pulp from the strained milk for baking. It’s really good in crackers, brownies, and rich chocolate cakes, and it’s a popular ingredient in raw food preparations. It’s ok to use it wet, or dehydrate it for really easy storage. After I dehydrate the pulp, I put it through the food processor until it’s fine. Wet nut pulp will keep about 3 days in the fridge, or months in the freezer. Cafe Janae, a blog I found recently, has a few nice recipes for nut pulp to get started with. Anyway, here’s the link to the nut milk bag.  The website, Elaina Love’s Pure Joy Planet, has a lot of fun stuff beside nut bags to browse while you’re there.

I never even thought of freezing the pulp! Great! I have a bunch of almond pulp I have been storing up in the freezer and I am going to get busy with that! Thank you. Give that cute little Eves a hug from Granny.

This post is great timing for me! I have a hard time squeezing alternative milks into my $40/week food budget, and have systemic lupus so I really need the alkalizing qualities that the almonds provide. I haven’t bought almonds in bulk yet; any source suggestions? I did buy 20 pounds of Brazil nuts in ’08, which led to the fabulous discovery that if I crack several Brazil nuts in a row, the dust makes my throat close up. :-Þ

  3. I usually buy my nuts from Costco or Azure Standard (it’s a grocery co-op). Costco is cheapest…3 lbs for…I think around 9 dollars? The co-op has 5 lbs of raw California almonds for $20.95. I think they deliver to your area (azurestandard.com). If you like cracking nuts they have 5 lbs of almonds in the shell for $8.05. (Something to do while watching Lost? :)

Can you please write some more stuff?

  6. Hey Audrey! Actually it doesn’t cost more…as long as you don’t buy super expensive nuts. :) Hope your move went OK1!!
